Cyndi Lauper
Cynthia Ann
Stephanie Lauper, better known as Cyndi Lauper, was born in
New York on June 22, 1953. She was only 12 years old when she started
playing guitar and writing her own songs. By 1977, her vocal cords
were so strained that she had to wait two years before starting her
Blue Angel band, with John Turi. They released an album of the
same name but it didn’t get anywhere so Cyndi decided to go solo.
She started out singing in clubs and brought out her first album,
entitled She's so Unusual, in 1983. It was an instant hit,
featuring the now legendary hits, Girls Just Want to Have Fun
and Time After Time, and it took her on the road for two whole
years. Cyndi Lauper was known for her flamboyant image but wanted to
change that; she succeeded in doing so with her second album, True
Colors (the True Colors piano score is available here, on
Noviscore). Unfortunately, her popularity declined thereafter, with
the exception of her 2010 album, Memphis Blues (nominated for
a Grammy), featuring BB King, no less! Cyndi Lauper is still singing
today but is also enjoying other activities, appearing in various TV
shows (Gossip Girl, Queer as a Folk, Bones) and reality TV. She took
part in The Celebrity Apprentice in 2010 and launched her own reality
TV show in 2013, appropriately entitled Still So Unusual.
