Hello Dolly
"Hello Dolly" is an American musical written by playwright Michael Stewart and directed in 1964 by theatre producer David Merrick. It is an adaptation of Thornton Wilder's play entitled "The Matchmaker". Hello Dolly" premiered on January 15, 1964 at the St. James Theatre on Broadway. It went on to play for more than 6 years, or 2844 performances. The American composer Jerry Herman wrote all the titles of this musical, including the famous "Hello Dolly" which won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1965 and was a resounding success thanks to the performance of Louis Armstrong. The piece alternates with brilliantly catchy melodies with undeniable charm and moments of pure music-hall with spectacular orchestrations. It won 10 Tony Awards in 1964 (the equivalent of the Oscars for theatre) including Best Musical Comedy and Best Composer and Lyricist. "Hello Dolly" is above all the story of a woman, Dolly Gallagher Levi, a grieving young widow who decides to take her destiny into her own hands so as not to end up alone.
