Princess Mononoke
"Princess Mononoke" is a Japanese animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki is also the creator of "My Neighbour Totoro", "Chihiro's Journey" and "The Moving Castle". Released in 1997, it was Miyazaki's first successful film and has since been regarded as the Japanese Walt Disney — a reputation that he owes in part to his rigour and extreme professional conscience, since he personally checks each drawing in his films. "Princess Mononoke" took two years to produce. It was a hit as soon as it was released and was praised by the critics who described it as a masterpiece of animation. For several months, it ranked first at the Japanese box office, even surpassing "E.T. the extraterrestrial" in terms of admissions. Only "Titanic" managed to dislodge it from this glorious first place. Through the adventures of Ashitaka and San, Hayao Miyazaki addresses the question of the relationship between Man and Nature and denounces the uselessness of war, which generates violence and hatred. For the soundtrack, Hayao Miyazaki called on the composer Joe Hisaishi, with whom he had already collaborated on his previous productions. Hisaishi has written a theme of rare dramatic intensity that contributes greatly to the success of the film.
