Serge Gainsbourg

Serge Gainsbourg was a French singer-songwriter born on 2 April 1928 in Paris. Born into a Russian-Jewish immigrant family, he began his life in the arts as a painter, before becoming known for his musical talents. At the age of 30, Serge Gainsbourg had a breakthrough. While staying in a room at the Schola Cantorum in Paris with Elisabeth Levitsky, he realised that a hidden door led directly to the concert hall where several American jazz groups were performing... Fascinated, Serge Gainsbourg abandoned his bohemian life to become a piano-bar crooner in the coastal casinos and cabarets of Paris. In this milieu, he met Boris Vian at the Milord l'Arsouille cabaret and discovered his provocative, cynical and funny lyrics. In 1957, Serge was a background pianist and guitarist for Michèle Arnaud. She stumbled upon his compositions while visiting his home to see his paintings. Pushed on stage, Serge Gainsbourg sang his own repertoire before recording his first album "Du chant à la une" a year later. Throughout his career, Gainsbourg explored a wide range of musical genres. Provocative words, double meaning messages and polemics nourish the singer's musical identity. Some criticize him, others admire him, and this is what makes him a prominent figure in French music. The women in his life, in particular Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, inspired his greatest hits: "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Je t'aime... moi non plus". His musical career came to an end after 30 years: the singer died on 2 March 1991.
