Waltz of Longing

Ludwig van Beethoven

Some classical pieces are just naturally elegant and romantic in their simplicity and Beethoven's Waltz of Longing (Valse du désir) is one of them. This piece was adapted by Beethoven from Schubert's Waltz D.365 no.2. Our piano adaptations include one in the original tonality (A-flat major) as well as two others for skill levels 1 & 2 which we have transposed in G-major for easier reading. The "solo instruments" are vocals, but also violins, flutes, saxophones, clarinets, ....

The music sheets on this page contain:

the melodic transcription of the work
the harmonic arrangement (the chords, written in international music notation (Am, B, C7, F...)
the lyrics, if any
notable elements when they are interesting (bass line, instrumental response, piano riff...)

They have the same structure as the vocals piano sheet music, and can therefore be used in conjunction with our accompaniment piano sheet music.

Here is the music sheet you should choose according to the type of instrument you play:

★★★☆ Determine my level

Level 1 The right hand plays mostly one note at a time; sometimes several, but only if the harmonising notes do not require too much spacing.

The left hand plays a simple accompaniment without great rhythmic difficulty.

The hands do not move around very much.

Number of years of piano playing: approximately 1 to 3 years
Level 2 The right hand often plays several notes at once to harmonise the melody (thirds, sixths, octaves, etc.).

The left hand develops arpeggios and certain more elaborate formulas to enhance the musical and rhythmic rendering.

The hands move a little more.

Number of years of piano playing: approximately between 3 and 5 years
Level 3 The right hand can play certain parts in octaves and even chords if the title requires it.

The left hand develops fairly extensive arpeggios and more elaborate rhythmic formulas. It often moves around a lot, for example to play very low notes.

The hands move around a lot.

Number of years of piano playing: about 5+ years
Expert Level The right hand often plays in octaves and even chords. Some sequences require very good technical and physical dexterity.

The left hand develops very extensive arpeggios and rhythmic formulas, sometimes very elaborate, even at a high tempo.

The hands make significant movements, for example to alternate notes in different keys.

Number of years of piano playing: approximately 6-10 years. Very good conservatory level.

Some websites allow you to transpose your sheet music yourself but we prefer to proceed differently, for two reasons:

As our music sheets have fingering to make it easier for you to play, this becomes invalid if you change key and often interferes with the legibility of the notes that have been transposed.
As our arrangements are the result of meticulous work to make them sound as good as possible, we wish to have control over the chosen key, as transposing into keys that are too far apart would make the arrangement too low or too high, to the detriment of the musical quality. We will work with you to ensure that the desired key is not too far off so that the arrangement will still sound great.
